Math Home Learning

Our math learning looks a little different when we are learning from home but it is still happening.

The students have been busy working on Mathletics, Math Buddy, Prodigy, Math Choices and their Math Google Slides, which are taking the place of the orange math books in class.

Today a few of the students played a basic facts games using dice online. The students could choose how many dice they wanted to use and were great at challenging themselves.

Daniel, Jesse and Jackson's dad taught them a math game at home.  They made a video to share the game with the class.

Click on the name to go to Dan's blog or Jesse's blog to watch the video.

Dan was learning how to embed the video on his blog.

Week 4 - Back to Level 2 - What we think about it.

This week there have been cases of Covid-19 in our Auckland community. Auckland is in L3 lockdown and the rest of the country has returned to Level 2.

Today we discussed what this meant for our class, our school and our community.

The students thought about their experience in Level 2 last term. What were the rules? How do they feel about L2 now? Here are some of the students thoughts ...

ZANA

You have to physical distance. 3 or less people are allowed in a dairy, keep a two metre distance away from people that are not in our family. No parties, no going to other countries. You can not travel so far away from where you live. No big gathering’s of 100 people or over. No touching our nose, mouth, ears and eyes. You have to hand sanitize a lot so you wont get covid 19.

CHASE

Now people are not allowed touch and not allowed to touch their face. Now your not allowed to play tag or any touching games because that is what you call sharing germs and that makes the other people sick and that could cause covid-19.

KODA

Don’t go into public toilets or go on public playground.Wash your hands before and after baking, playing with animals and going onto the community.

NICO

I feel annoyed because I get bored at home in lockdown. [Apart from watching movies] I love watching movies. lockdown + movies = happiness lockdown + no school = boredness

CARRIE

You are not allowed to hug, that is so sad because I love to hug.  You can not have a gathering of more than 100 people and  no shared kai. You can not travel overseas.

EDMON

We were supposed to have a cross country on Thursday but because of Covid-19 it got postponed to a different date and our assembly was canceled to a different date too. covid -19 is a pan because you can not play soccer, rugby or have gymnastic competition.

LUCY

At level two lock-down we all have to make sure that we are social distancing. I do not feel happy about coronavirus being back in New Zealand. I do feel a bit scared about my family that live in Auckland because most of them are adults.

ZION

Lockdown, it is so boring if we go into lockdown. Its so boring because I do not get to see my friends and I do not get to go for a walk.I feel so disappointed.

KAYDEE

Always remember that we need to be 1-2 meters apart and we need to stay in our bubbles. The people in Auckland need to stay in isolation. We need to try really hard to not bite our nails and touch our face. We need to make sure we wash our hands before and after we go somewhere.

Term 2 - Te Manga - Proud and Passionate Leaders of Learning in the Heart of the Community

The students in Te Manga have been super busy since the beginning of Term 2 started.  They have impressed me with the learning that they are doing at home.It has been great to keep in touch at our hangouts each day and the students are using our google hangout timetable for whole class catch ups and group sessions really well.

During our whole class catch up today we had lots of people who were keen to share what they had been doing at home. Not everyone chose to share today which is fine, hopefully they might want to share next time.

Today Tuva shared some photo's of her making - Kolakako or Swedish fudge cake with her mum. They looked delicious. We hope she will share the recipe on her blog.

Larell talked about all the learning he has been doing about ANZAC Day. He found out that there were WW1 mascots like dogs, horses, bird, cats, rats and even donkeys. He made an ANZAC poppy and shared his learning on his blog

Kaydee watched a science experiment on
our class site and did the egg and vinegar experiment. That one didn't work but then Kaydee and her dad did one with baking soda and vinegar outside and it exploded all over her dog.

Jamie has been adventuring around his farm picking mushrooms and trying to avoid stepping on spiky bushes.

Mihi's mum made her and Anahera some bats. She put them on a rope  and when you pull the strings it moves. She said her sister keeps beating her!

Edmon shared  his science experiment that he did with his dad. It was all about surface tension, he explained it really well. We all thought it was very interesting and you can find out more about his experiment by clicking on his blog here.

Millan told us that he has been helping do jobs at home like the rubbish, recycling and helping his nan. He's also been getting a lot of math done too! He
also told us that it's his little sisters birthday tomorrow, she is turning 1!

Carrie talked about the reading she has been doing, how she has been working out her technology and she also helped make a delicious brownie too.

Kaiora made snow at home! We couldn't believe it but he told us he used baking soda, water and salt. He was able to make snow at the beach! How cool is that!

Katarina told us that she made the most delicious cheese scones. She felt so proud of herself because they're using hard rocks. Well done
Katarina.

Yvette has been busy working with her boys, she even did one of their PE activities with them; as many burpees as you can in 5 minutes. Way to go Yvette.
We were really happy to see Sir this morning too. He has been very busy having meetings with lots of principals and teachers. He was very happy because Mrs Windleborn made him banana muffins and they
were delicious. Lucky Sir!!!

I told everyone that I have been enjoying catching up with everyone each day. I have also loved all the mushrooms that are growing around where we live. We have been mushroom picking and I love mushrooms. I could eat mushrooms for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

We have been at home for 4 weeks now but it has not stopped the enthusiasm that our class has for learning and the enjoyment we all get from catching up with each other!

Paparore Teachers Love to Read

WALT use videos to share books with our students.

Mrs Neki had a great idea. She said that the students are able to see their own teacher during google hangouts, but they are not able to see all the teachers. So she suggested that all of the teachers could share a book that we enjoy via video and post the videos on our class sites for students to enjoy. We thought this was a fabulous idea.

Take a look at Mrs Neki's reading The Gruffalo. If you would like to watch all of the videos, please click on the link to our Te Manga Class Site.

School Holidays at HOME

Our school holidays have been a little unusual this term due to the nationwide lock down. It has been great to catch up with Te Manga students over the past week and find out a little but about what they have been up to during the school holidays.

The students have been keeping busy with lots of different activities: bike riding, birthdays, helping with jobs, fort making, art activities, writing, making google slide decks, research projects, baking and even getting a new pet pig!

We were even lucky enough to have Mrs Davan join our class today. It was lovely to see everyone's smiling faces. We are looking forward to more catching up next week when Term 2 starts.

'Te Manga at Home' - New Zealand Nationwide Lockdown

On Monday our Prime Minister Jacinda Adern, announced that NZ would be going into lockdown in 48 hours to help stop the spread of Covid-19. I was very proud of the way our class responded to this news.  They were positive and thoughtful in their discussion about what was to come. This class are leaders of learning at school and they will be at home too.

Today it is Day 3 of learning from home. I was able to connect with a few students on a google hangout today and I plan to connect with more tomorrow. I have seen lots of different examples of learning happening both online and offline which is great to see.

Here are a few examples of what students have been doing at home:

ALANI's WRITING:

Covid 19 is a sort of bug that can get into your lungs. If the Coronavirus touch’s your hands it’s ok because it doesn't want to get into your hands, it just wants to get into your lungs. It can get into your lungs by touching, putting your hands in your mouth, picking nose or rubbing your eyes.

By washing your hand with soap in every spot you can stop the spread of Coronavirus.
Covid 19 is a little bug that you cant see.

Sea Week - Week 6 - Sat 29th February - Sunday 8th March

Seaweek is a week to celebrate our learning about the ocean and all that it gives to us. The theme for 2020 is Connecting With Our Seas. Ko au te moana, ko te moana ko au – I am the sea, the sea is me. You can look at the learning we are going to do this week on our class site - click here.

Today the students were introduced to a great website called Young Ocean Explorers and they were so engaged in their learning I had to whip out the camera and take a few photos.

Check out this video to show just how quiet the classroom was while they were learning all about their favourite marine life.

Tuesday - 'News Day' - Gum and Toheroa's

We were very excited today when Lucy brought out a huge piece of gum to share with us. She told us that her dad found the gum when he was fixing a pipe under a house that her mum and dad lived in before she was born. What a find! We were so glad to share Lucy's taonga. Next Grace brought in a toheroa shell that she found at Te Oneroa a Tohe. This was an excellent time to share such as treasure as it is Sea Week this week. Great timing Grace!

Manaiakalani - LEARN, CREATE, SHARE

We are continuing our learning with Manaiakalani and have 1:1 chromebooks in class. The chromebooks are a learning tool to enable the students to make wider connections, access information quickly, create work and share their work online.
Our Te Manga 2020 Class Learning Site is up and running click on our link to check it out - https://bit.ly/37XHgJh.
Before the students started to use the chromebooks in class they had to learn and agree to following the KAWA of CARE. The KAWA of CARE ensures that students know how to care for and use their device in a responsible way ie. I agree to be in the right place, at the right time, every time I am online. It ensures that they will get the best use of their device during their learning time.

The students signed this document which is kept in class however if you wish to view the document, there is a copy on our class site under the Cyber Smart.
The students have been creating slides or a poster to share their learning about the Kawa of Care.
Check out Alani's slide deck about the Kawa of Care!

Check out Chase's poster about the Kawa of Care!
