Anzac Day Writing

On ANZAC Day we celebrate to honor the soldiers that fought for us in the war. Some celebrate by having a dawn parade . We call it a dawn parade because that is when the soldiers landed on Gallipoli on the 25th of April 1915. We wear poppies and some people might wear their whanau's medals that they won when they were fighting. Poppies are special because they were the first flowers to grow on Gallipoli after the war. We go to memorials and sing , say prayers, say the ode and listen to the last post. At the memorials we lay wreaths on the stones and everybody lays their poppies on them. Veterans are old soldiers that fought in the war and survived. Veterans wear their medals proudly. They celebrate by marching at dawn parades. Some people might cry because of all the soldiers that died for us. There might even be whanau who died. Lest We Forget.

ANZAC Day makes us remember about the soldiers that died in war. Poppies mean a lot because it was the first plant to grow on the land that they had war on we should remember them. My great great grandfather served in World War 1. He was 15 and when we go to ANZAC Day we wear a poppy and wear his medals.

Cooper

ANZAC Day is when we commemorate soldiers and people that have died in the World War 1 and World Wand and other wars and we wear poppies every ANZAC day on the 25th of April. We march, we commemorate and sing the National anthem. We also say the ode. Lest we Forget.

Look out our lovely poppies we made with Mrs Radich.

ANZAC Day 2020

The Ode of Rememberance

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them

The Te Manga students have been using our class site to learn all about ANZAC Day. Please click on this link to view our class site.

In Te Manga students have made poppies at home, created ANZAC artwork, done ANZAC colouring and made ANZAC biscuits.

Our class hangout this morning was a chance for people to share something that they know about ANZAC Day. Larell and Kaydee told us about their family members who served in WW2. Tuva-Lisa showed us her great granddad's medals. He had so many. Cooper did some beautiful ANZAC art which had a pictures of his two great grandfathers who fought in the war. Lots of the students brought their beautiful poppies! Oscar has been doing a project about his Great Granpa Tom who fought in WW2. Oscar  and Yvette shared told us about him and they have part of his parachute. If he was still alive it would be his 100th birthday on Sunday so they are going to have a celebration for him.

It was great to listen to these stories and to see all the wonderful poppies that the students had made during the week.

This year we will have to commemorate ANZAC Day a little differently due to the lock down, as we will be unable to go gather in a large group for an ANZAC service.

However there are lots of ways that we have found that we can still commemorate ANZAC Day. How will you and your whanau commemorate ANZAC Day this year?

Our ANZAC Learning

The students have been learning all about ANZAC Day and gaining an understanding of why it is an important part of our history. Many of the students have shared names of family members who served in WW1 and other wars NZ has been part of.

I was very impressed with the students and their learning on this topic. They were very enthusiastic, interested and motivated to search out more information than what was in front of them. They finished off the learning unit with Poppy Art with Mrs Radich and making Anzac biscuits with Whaea Sharls.
