It was great to get back to school this week to catch up with everyone and hear all about the holiday fun!
This week we welcomed Whaea Saroya into our class. Saroya is in her third year of her teaching degree through the University of Waikato and will be in class all term.
The class have enjoyed learning about the Olympics this week and following our kiwi athletes as they go for gold. We have enjoyed watching different events live on our smart board. The students are already thinking of how they could compete at the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane!
Today we joined with Te Tinana for our first 'Funday Friday'. We will be working with Te Tinana every Friday this term. Initially we will be learning about film making as Paparore School has the opportunity to enter two films into the Te Hiku film festival. The theme for the movies this year are 'VALUES'. We are going to have a Paparore Film Festival on 2nd September and will select two films to go through to the Te Hiku Film Festival on 16th September.
Check out the 2020 Te Hiku Film Festival highlights!
The Te Hiku Kura Film Festival was a huge success. Our students had a great time taking part in the film making process. Our wonderful local film maker, Harley Alexander, has put a clip together of the highlights of the film festival. It is a fun reflection on the effort, creativity and talent that was shown during the Te Hiku Film Festival!
Today our class worked with Harley to do some film making. We looked at different camera shots and how to get clear audio using our i-pads. The students worked in groups to re-tell the story of Grace's Pizza Eating Pony Kenny. There is lots of filming that we need to go through but we did manage to make one story which was filmed and directed by Zion and Larell. We used this experience in our writing - click on the link to our class site.
Our class has enjoyed having local film maker, Harley Alexander, teach us about movie making.
Harley has introduced the basics of film making to our students and gave the class an opportunity to be part of a film crew.

Check out a few of our scene shots as we aimed to make our first ever short film.
Today we recapped our learning from our last session with Harley and definitely stepped it up. When we discussed our learning as a group, we realised we have already learnt so much about film making!
These are some of the things that we now know.

Our school has purchased tripods and boom poles with small smart phones so we actually can really start making movies!!! We can hardly wait until Harley comes back! Check out the students blogging about their experience!
Our school is lucky to have local film maker Harley Alexander taking movie making sessions with the middle - senior school classes. Harley came in today and 'WOWED' us with his short film, 'Incoming Call' which engaged the students from the get-go! He introduced the basics of film making to our students and gave the class an opportunity to be part of a film crew. He also shared a video made by kids at the Kerikeri Summer Playhouse Camp which was all about 'How to Tell a Good Story.' The kids and I loved this!
They learnt what is actually said on a film set by each of the key roles in the crew: Director - turn over Camera - camera speed Sound - sound speed Clipper Clapper - "_____ shot" Take 1
The students then had an opportunity to act out their own scenes in smaller groups and this where the excitement really came through! The students thoroughly enjoyed their experience and we can hardly wait until our next session with him.
