Seaweek - Te Oneroa-a-Tōhē Beach Clean

Last Friday our classes went to Te Oneroa-a-Tōhē to do a beach clean as part of our Seaweek learning. We split into 2 groups and walked approx 2km either side of the ramp, picking up any rubbish that we could see. We picked up a variety of plastic rubbish including clothing, lighters, cigarette butts, lots of pieces of foam along with some alkathene pipe and a car part.

We were pleasantly surprised to only gather 1 bag of rubbish over that 4km distance however when this is put into perspective, NZ has 15,000 kms of coastline. If we were to pick up a bag of rubbish every 4kms, that would be 3,750 bags of rubbish. Something to think about!

A huge thank you to our whanau who supported us on the day with supervision and transportation and to the students who were fabulous 'Sea Cleaners'. The students certainly enjoyed their time outside the classroom and as an added bonus, they saw Miss Kolland too!

Tuturu Tangata with Whaea Nat

We have Tuturu Tangata with Whaea Nat every Thursday. Whaea Nat is teaching us about healthy eating, food groups and being fit! Today we made smoothies and bliss balls.

Some of the students weren't sure about the spinach in the smoothies but overall they thought they were delicious. The bliss balls were a healthy treat, made with dried fruit, oats, peanut butter and rolled in coconut.

It was great to use our outdoor classroom and we appreciate being able to cook with the help of Whaea Nat and Whaea Reyna.

St Johns with Whaea Jo

We had two fantastic first aid sessions with Whaea Jo this week. The students learnt how to  bandage a wound, how to respond in an emergency if someone is unconscious and how to ring 111. They learnt the importance of knowing your address and phone number in an emergency. The students enjoyed working with each other and learnt so much from Whaea Jo.
