Term 3 Assembly - The Great Te Manga and Te Tinana Reading Adventure

Today Te Whare Tui performed a Duffy Assembly called 'The Great Reading Adventure' to celebrate Book Week. Our main character Duffy (aka Arahia) loves reading but her sister Scruffy (aka Kaydee) thinks reading is soooooooo boring. To encourage Scruffy to read, Duffy and her friends take Scruffy on the 'Great Reading Adventure' through stories such as The Cat in the Hat, Maui and the Sun, comic book heroes, non-fiction books and the Harry Potter series. Each of the students performed with enthusiasm and had a lot of fun during the performance. You can check out the script by clicking this link: The Great Reading Adventure Script

Here is our assembly video. We hope you enjoy watching it as much as the students enjoyed performing it.

Book Week 2019

Today we all had the opportunity to check out a huge selection of books on display in the whare as part of National Book Week. The students were in awe of the selections and were very excited to add them to their 'wish lists'. There were quite a few common titles which interested the students so I hope to order some of these books for our school library so everyone can enjoy them.

We are all looking forward to the 'Book Character Dress Up Day' tomorrow!

Movie Making with Harley Alexander

Our school is lucky to have local film maker Harley Alexander taking movie making sessions with the middle - senior school classes. Harley came in today and 'WOWED' us with his short film, 'Incoming Call' which engaged the students from the get-go! He introduced the basics of film making to our students and gave the class an opportunity to be part of a film crew. He also shared a video made by kids at the Kerikeri Summer Playhouse Camp which was all about 'How to Tell a Good Story.' The kids and I loved this!

They learnt what is actually said on a film set by each of the key roles in the crew:
Director - turn over
Camera - camera speed
Sound - sound speed
Clipper Clapper - "_____ shot" Take 1
The students then had an opportunity to act out their own scenes in smaller groups and this where the excitement really came through! The students thoroughly enjoyed their experience and we can hardly wait until our next session with him.

Ka Pai Kai with Whaea Anna

Today Whaea Anna from Te Hiku Hauora visited our classroom to introduce the students to a healthy eating program that we will be taking part in called Ka Pai Kai!

This is a program aimed at enabling students to plan, prepare and cook healthy meals for their families.

Each week a group will take their turn to prepare and cook a healthy meal for the class which we are ALL looking forward to. Our groups will be making spaghetti bolognaise, berry smoothies, nachos, pizza and pancakes. The kids were very surprised that these dishes could be healthy which was an excellent light bulb moment for them.

We are really looking forward to getting started next week!
