Some of the students asked if they could dress up too. We thought, why not? Whaea Deb made a Halloween display in class and all the students had a scary photo. Science - An Amazing Substance - WATER

Today we joined with Te Tinana to re-start our Friday Fun Day learning. We have a science focus this term which means every Friday the students will be able to take part in fun science activities.

The focus of our first session was that wonderful, magical liquid that is everywhere - WATER! We used three fun water activities to get the students thinking about scientific concepts.

The first was EVAPORATION. We were impressed with the knowledge the students already had. They were able to make scientific predictions about what they thought would happen to water when it is in the shade compared to direct sunlight. They had a lot of fun splashing their water about.

Next Mrs Davan showed us a magic trick. She filled up a cup of water and covered it with a piece of plastic. Then she turned it upside down and GUESS what, the water did not come out. The students discussed the idea of gravity to help them to understand what was happening. If air could not get in, the water did not come out. As soon as they shook their cups, air got in and gravity does it's thing!

We were running out of time but we tried one more experiement which turned out to be a little tricky so we may need to give it another go next week. We were looking at the different properties of cold water and warm water. We asked the students to think about which one might be 'heavier' and why? We used cups of cold water and warm water to see what would happen if we put them together with surprising results. The students found out that cold water is more dense so it sinks, warm water 'rises' or floats to the top.

Overall we had a great session and are already looking forward to next week! If you want to have a look at any of these experiments, please click onto the link to visit our Te Manga Class Science page. CLICK on LINK
