Rarangi Matahiko - Our Waitangi Learning Journey

Our class were very fortunate to take part in the digital learning programme Rarangi Matahiko along with Te Tinana this term. The Raranga Matihiko programme aims to deliver innovative digital technologies while increasing access to national and local exhibitions and collections. The dynamic teaching team of Whaea Kerry and Whaea Monika visitedus at school twice and then we travelled to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to learn with them in their super modern classroom. This was an amazing experience for all of us. Throughout their learning journey, the students took part in many unplugged activities including logistical thinking, spacial awareness, communication and lots of team work. They have learnt to use digital technology to enhance their learning and showed lots of expertise when using Paint 3D and Scratch.
The students reflected on what they enjoyed the most and you can see from their responses that there they really took a lot from the experience.
Scroll down to read our students responses.

Jai
The best thing with Whaea Monika was when we got to play the robot game and paint 3d. The second best game was scratch. When we played the robot game mason was controlling me and I was the robot. He said go forward and go left and go right sometimes he said go right 6x and go left 4x.

Alani
The best thing thing that I did with whaea monika and whaea kerry was going on the technology and making cool backgrounds and I liked my background because I made one when it was night. The hard thing was doing  writing the turns and writing the forwards. I thought it was hard because when it was a turn I did not know what way it was. The fun thing was the lego because I made a super cool lego patten.

Zana
I liked the lego the best because our partners made the same thing.
I made a zigzag out of lego and a boat we had 5 pieces.

When Whaea Kerry and Whaea Monika came in we did Paint 3D. It was fun.
Me and Teina were buddies. We made a background I didn't  finish mine.
But Teina finished his and and when we did the lego I mad a satellite.
It was hard for me to think  what to make but we learnt how to program a robot. My favorite bit was scratch. I made a slide show.

Kiarn
My favourite part with Whaea Kerry was when we went on to paint 3D.
You had to be with a buddy and you could draw cool backgrounds and when you made your background you needed to save it and then you go on to scratch and then you can use the background for scratch.

Mason
The best thing with Whaea Monika was when we had to find a buddy and you got to control your buddy to go left, right and forward. I was with Kevin I was the robot and Kevin was in control.

Millan
My favorite part was when we had to tell our robots to go anywhere and I really liked making my background on Paint 3D.

My favourite part was when we did paint 3D, making the eel, the coding and the lego. When we did the lego I made my lego into anything I wanted, I had to tell my buddy how to make it. After they made it we both had a look if it’s right. It was right.

Teina
My favorite part with was when we used Paint 3D. When I used the app I tried to make a river going into the ocean, it was pretty successful. It looked really good when I added clouds and the water. When we had to make the lego patterns Riley told me the instructions to make the right pattern but if you get it wrong you get another try to make the right pattern Riley made a satellite.

Anahera
I loved the part when to do coding with the blocks . It was awesome . The next thing I loved doing the paint 3D it was cool. I liked doing the hidden message it was awesome. I liked that we could do stuff on scratch and making stuff move around  like doing backdrops and getting letters to write words like scratch and make them go crazy that was the best part ever. I also liked doing the part  when we done the lego cause we done funny creations like a mustache and a dog .

Our ANZAC Learning

The students have been learning all about ANZAC Day and gaining an understanding of why it is an important part of our history. Many of the students have shared names of family members who served in WW1 and other wars NZ has been part of.

I was very impressed with the students and their learning on this topic. They were very enthusiastic, interested and motivated to search out more information than what was in front of them. They finished off the learning unit with Poppy Art with Mrs Radich and making Anzac biscuits with Whaea Sharls.
